James Levine really took to the stage Friday night.
"It looks beautiful, feels beautiful and has minimal acoustical change," the Boston Symphony Orchestra music director said about the new Symphony Hall stage, a faithful restoration of the original 1900 oak floor finished in time for the season's opening night concert.

The gleaming new deck supported Levine, soprano Renee Fleming and flutist James Galway during a program of music by American composers George Gershwin, Samuel Barber and William Balcom. The night ended with Czech composer Antonin Dvorak's tribute to America, his ninth symphony, "From the New World."
Following the early concert, 500 benefactors moved on to the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel for a dinner co-chaired by Carole and Edward Rudman, a BSO trustee.
Fleming dined with BSO chair Edward Linde and wife Joyce of Weston. Galway and Balcom chatted together at another table. Levine dined with family members.

Shore thing
With the declared dress code of "diamonds and denim," The Esplanade Association's biannual "Moondance," held Friday night under a tent beside the Charles River, was a sure draw for the Hub's young professionals.
Co-chaired by association founder Jeryl Oristaglio and caterer Dan Mathieu of MAX Ultimate Food, the party raised funds to restore and care for the Esplanade, the riverside park enjoyed annually by 2 million people.
Oristaglio mixed formal with informal in a custom-made Denise Hajjar gown that opened at the waist and flowed around her jeans. Also matching upscale with down were Peggy Henry, wife of Red Sox owner John Henry, Lisa and Alex Pierpont, Simone and Ted Winston, Beth Dickerson and David Drubner, and Courtney and Michael Forrester, who left more sparkling than when they arrived because she won a diamond necklace from Hearts on Fire in the raffle.
Boston Common magazine event manager Lauren Balsbaugh brought her mother, interior designer Carolina Balsbaugh, to the gala designed by Bryan Rafanelli.
CBS4 reporter Kasey Kaufman was emcee.

Love of a boat
The USS Constitution Museum's "Presidents Dinner" Wednesday night at the Boston Harbor Hotel honored two supporters of the museum and the historic naval vessel docked beside it in Charlestown.
Margaret Moores Benson of Boston and retired Navy Capt. Thomas Hudner of Concord, a Medal of Honor recipient and former director of the state's Office of Veterans Affairs, received the awards.
News Center 5 anchor Liz Brunner was emcee. Financial analyst Ian Toll, author of "Six Frigates: The Epic History of the Founding of the American Navy," was guest speaker.
Guests included museum president G. West Saltonstall, USS Constitution commanding officer Cmdr. Thomas Graves and wife Jodi, museum overseer Michele Nadeem, retired Army Col. Brian Baker and retired USS Constitution CO David Cashman and wife Bobbi, who were introduced by Benson and married aboard the Constitution.

Home runway
The Boston Red Sox wives pitched in Tuesday afternoon at "From Fenway to the Runway," a Heritage on the Garden fashion show at Excelsior to benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's women's cancer programs.
New England Sports Network anchor Hazel Mae was emcee at the event co-hosted by team owners' wives Peggy Henry and Stacey Lucchino and Dana-Farber supporters Mary-Ellen Maich and Cecelia Rappaport.
"One of the most wonderful things is the way the wives step up," Red Sox Foundation's Meg Vaillancourt said. Kathryn Nixon led off with a recitation of the "Baseball Prayer," part of which reads: "Play me as you need me." Wives and fiancees playing fashion model as needed included Tiffany Ortiz, Shonda Schilling and Ashley Papelbon, whose husband, Jonathan, was the only player attending.
Clothing from Jacadi was modeled by four children - Catherine and Griffin Jordan, Otti Logan and Anna Natalia Epstein, daughter of store owner Lucia Epstein.
